As the impact of the still current recession continues, fashion takes inspiration from a new financial landscape. Trash can couture, which sees designers literally raiding the bin which represents a new take on fashionable upcycling.
Simon Ras-Mussen drew from this mentality in his 2010 collection, stuffing puffa jackets with fabric and plastic bags and by embellishing oversized coats with newspapers and plastic cups. Burnt denim and coats created from recycled quilts completed the look, cocooning the wearer in a soft protective shelter that portrays that eco is the new black.
